Toto and Weezer

Toto have a cover of Weezer's "Hash Pipe" on the way

Did you know that Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo cribbed “Hash Pipe“‘s opening line from an early Beatles song? Yep, it’s true! Anyway, ’80s rockers Toto are going to release a cover of Weezer’s “Hash Pipe” any day now. Why? Because the Weez covered Toto’s “Rosanna” and “Africa” earlier this summer.

That’s right, the Steve Lukather-led Toto confirmed their workup of “Hash Pipe” — Weezer’s unexpectedly aggressive, 2001 comeback single — will be released in the coming weeks. The group is returning the cover song favor after Weezer rode a meme-errific viral wave with their take on the two classics.

Why “Hash Pipe”? Drummer Steve Porcaro explains:

“You know, we listened to ‘Beverly Hills,'” he says, via Billboard. “I wanted to maybe even do a real ‘Africa’-type version of that, I was thinking about for a minute. But you know what? We wanted to make it different, but we wanted to do something rock ‘n’ roll. I wanted to show everyone what a good rock ‘n’ roll band we can be.”
