Did that new ‘Edward Scissorhands’ ad just reveal how the movie actually ends?

It has been 30 years since the Tim Burton classic Edward Scissorhands hit the big screen, and thanks to a Super Bowl ad, we’re getting another glimpse of that world.

On Sunday, ahead of Super Bowl LV, Winona Ryder reprised her role as Kim Boggs for a Cadillac commercial about their all-electric LYRIQ. While Johnny Depp did not return as the titular character, we are introduced to the couple’s son Edgar as portrayed by Timothée Chalamet.

In the new commercial, Edgar struggles with daily tasks much like Edward did including riding public transit and playing catch. Kim witnesses how his scissor hands affect him and attempts to make it better with the Cadillac with hands-free driving.

Fans of the original film will recall (and those who don’t should know there are spoilers ahead) that Kim and Edward part ways at the movie’s conclusion. It’s then revealed that Kim, as an old woman, is telling the story to her granddaughter. In their conversation, Kim reveals she hasn’t seen Edward since that night.

However, now, the new Cadillac commercial rewrites the film’s ending with the addition of their son, Edgar. The new development had fans of the original questioning what actually happened.

Ryder opened up about the experience of reprising one of her iconic roles, telling Variety that she “loved the idea of working with Timothée, and the fact that it was an electric car was important too.”

It was pretty surreal to have Timothée play my son, Edgar,” the Stranger Things star continues. “Timothée is an incredible guy—so talented and sweet. I felt a pretty instant bond with him.”

Like Ryder, Chalamet (who is reportedly in talks for the prequel Wonka, another iconic story that Burton once added his signature style to) was excited to bring the character to life for a good cause.

Edward Scissorhands was a movie I adored growing up, and the opportunity to step into that world was a dream come true,” the actor tells Vogue. I was also excited about Lyriq’s emphasis on environmental sustainability and cutting down on using fossil-fuel-dependent cars. It felt like the perfect combination of legacy with an eye towards the future.”

Chalamet, who revealed he’s a big fan of Burton, also wanted to make sure he paid tribute to the original.

“This was a wonderful opportunity to hopefully make the original material relatable to a modern audience without sacrificing the originality of the 1990 version,” he says. “Instead, we wanted to create a character that didn’t make you blink in terms of a present-day setting but was a total homage to the character Johnny Depp created.”

The revival was also Burton-approved with the director revealing he’s excited to see his story exist in a new world.

“It’s rare when a work you’re proud of continues to live on and evolve with the times, even after 30 years,” Burton says. “I’m glad to see Edgar coping with the new world! I hope both fans and those being introduced to Edward Scissorhands for the first time enjoy it.”
