Johnny Depp dropped from ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean’ reboot plans

Pirates Of The Caribbean without Captain Jack Sparrow? Is that even possible? Well, according to the Daily Mail, it very well might be.

Reports are coming in that Johnny Depp, who has appeared in all five films thus far, has been dropped as Disney moves forward with reboot plans.

Stuart Beattie, who wrote the first film and receives character credits, is the first to step forward and confirm. Beattie states that Disney Studios will be reworking the entire franchise without Depp attached, according to the Daily Mail.

“I think he’s had a great run,” Beattie tells the Daily Mail. “Obviously, he’s made that character his own, and it’s become the character he’s most famous for now.

“And kids all over the world love him as that character so I think it’s been great for him, it’s been great for us, so I’m just very, very happy about it.”

The move might not be all that surprising to those who are aware that the last film, 2017’s Dead Men Tell No Tales, was the lowest grossing in the franchise.

The film brought in $62 million its opening weekend and $172 million domestically overall. Even compared to the previous film, 2014’s On Stranger Tides, which brought in $90 million opening weekend and $241 million overall, this is a major drop.

Reboot plans revealed earlier this week

Earlier this week, it was revealed Disney was eyeing the return of the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise, and they want the people behind everyone’s favorite “merc with a mouth,” to pen the script.

Per the report, Disney is looking to reboot the beloved franchise with the writing team of  Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who just so happen to be the creative minds behind the first two Deadpool films.

As of right now, the site reports that Disney has met with the two and they are currently in the very early stages of getting a script together for what would be the sixth Pirates Of The Caribbean film.

The article continued by sharing that Jerry Bruckheimer will still continue to be the producer of the franchise. However, it’s unclear if anyone else will return to the rebooted flick.

While it’s unclear what this means for the franchise, Deadline points out that bringing it back to life isn’t all that crazy of an idea. Especially once you consider the films have managed to gross $4.5 billion over the course of its existence.
