Dance Fever was recorded in London during the pandemic as everyone waited for the world to reopen. According to a press release, “It conjures up what Florence missed most in the midst of lockdown – clubs, dancing at festivals, being in the whirl of movement and togetherness – and the hope of reunions to come.”

Florence‘s fascination with the Renaissance concept of choreomania deeply influenced the album. Choreomania refers to groups of people who would dance wildly to the point of exhaustion, collapse – even death.

The concept of dance, something Florence turned to during the early days of her sobriety, remained a central theme while she created the album. Lyrically, “she took inspiration from the tragic heroines of pre-Raphaelite art, the gothic fiction of Carmen Maria Machado and Julia Armfield, the visceral wave of folk horror film from The Wicker Man and The Witch to Midsommar.”
