Following the success of Archie Comics teen-drama Riverdale, a new spin-off show is coming to Netflix based on the Archie comic, The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina.

The streaming service has picked up a 20-episode, two-season deal for the show that focuses on character Sabrina Spellman (of Sabrina the Teenage Witch fame). As previously reported, the show was in development with Riverdale host The CW back in September, but it's heading to Netflix instead.

The Riverdale production team will be working on the new show, with Archie Comics chief creative officer and Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa writing and directing.

A new episode of Sabrina the Teenage Witch hasn't aired since April 24, 2003, but Sabrina finds her origins in the Archie Comics. This yet-untitled Netflix series will likely be based on the darker, current comic book, The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina.

Unlike the upbeat '90s show starring Melissa Joan Hart, Chilling Adventures revisits different horror touchstones and is in a similar vein to Rosemary's Baby and The Exorcist. It gives an updated and reimagined look into Sabrina's occult origins and, as Nerdist reports, “finds Sabrina struggling to reconcile her dual nature (being half-witch and half-mortal) while protecting her family and the world from the forces of evil.”

“One day, Sabrina's going to be the most powerful sorceress who's ever lived—Archie's equivalent of Doctor Strange—but right now, she's a 16-year-old girl who's figuring out who she wants to be and if she's going to prom or not,” Aguirre-Sacasa tells USA Today.
