The video was directed by Nick Koenig, who's also responsible for Peep's “Awful Things.”

“Relationships have a way of overwhelming the meaning and context of physical items to the point of hijacking them. What once was just a household item might now be something that reminds us of that relationship to a point where it overpowers what that item was traditionally meant for.” Koenig shared some thoughts in a press release, the website notes. “Like Peep’s passing, no one got to say goodbye properly but the objects he left us (his body of work both musical and social) remain ours to share in our relationship with him.”

Marshmello and Peep started working on the collaboration prior to the rapper's passing, and the release of the track follows the intentions of his mother, Lisa Womack, to continue to release the music and art that Peep had planned to do himself in 2018.

In keeping with that promise, she immediately requested that Marshmello finish the project to allow Peep's voice to be heard through his art, and for that, she is deeply grateful.

“Peep brought an excitement to music that was unparalleled to anybody I’ve ever met,” Marshmello said on his collaboration with Peep.

“We started an idea together, that unfortunately we were never able to officially finish together. When I listen to this track now I get chills wishing he could hear it. This record is dedicated to Peep’s mother, family, friends and his fans. Gus will live forever through his music and that is something we should all be extremely thankful for.”

Lil Peep's death at the age of 21 came as a shock to the music community. Presumed an overdose, the musician's brother Oskar recently said the death was accidental: “He was super happy with where he was in life.”

Peep was part of GothBoiClique, cofounded with Wicca Phase aka Adam McIlwee, the ex-singer of Tiger’s Jaw, creating their own hip-hop/emo subgenre that has prompted a massive movement in the music industry. With over 100 million streams to-date, including tracks such as “Awful Things” and “The Brightside,” he solidified his standing in the genre-defying movement.
