LØLØ’s 10 songs to scream during your breakup

Whether we’d like to admit it or not, everyone has needed a solid breakup anthem once or twice (or dozens of times) in their lives. Songs provide a service in those heartbreaking situations unlike any other salve — they’re relatable, revitalizing, and cathartic. Is there published scientific proof to back that up? It’s irrelevant, because we’ve got LØLØ.

The rising star of contemporary pop punk has been fusing fiery angst and playful femininity since her emergence into the scene, and with her recent string of sticky, confrontational singles, has taken it to the next level. We loved this summer’s “hot girls in hell,” an explosive, in-your-face, sad, and angry track, and now we’re stewing in last week’s “2 of us,” where LØLØ rises to the occasion, taking charge dishing out witty comeback lines in her sparkling alto.

In the spirit of shifting the narrative and moving on with life and love, LØLØ let us in on her favorite breakup songs of all time.

boygenius – “Letter To An Old Poet”

A big-time obsession of mine. This song really sneaks up on you, because it’s a ballad, but at the same time, it’s so ruthless and amazing. It cuts so deep with such specific lines that somehow just make so much sense and feel like they were written about you personally. “You’re not special, you’re evil” is one of my favorite things to scream, ever.

Olivia Rodrigo – “love is embarrassing”

I love the beat and overall vibe of this song. It makes you want to scream and also dance and also cry. Along with “logical” — another great breakup screamer — I’d say it’s one of my favorite tracks on GUTS. Plus, it’s so true. Love is so fucking embarrassing.

Alanis Morissette – “You Oughta Know”

One of the most classic, screamy breakup songs of all time, I would say. This song always got me hyped up from a young age. The feeling in this song alone has definitely inspired me in my own writing.

The Script – “Breakeven”

Probably one of the truest lines of all time: “When a heart breaks, no, it don’t break even.” And when you’re on the bad half of that heart split, I’d say this song definitely helps to cope.

Marisa Maino – “LOCK ME UP”

The perfect song to listen to while you’re plotting your ex’s murder. Because who hasn’t daydreamed about killing their ex, right? Ha…ha…ha… right?

Taylor Swift – “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together”

For when you’re in the stage of the breakup where you’re so over it and just hate their guts and think they are pathetic, this would be the perfect song to scream. It always hypes me the F up.

Clean Bandit (feat. Julia Michaels) – “I Miss You”

I had to include this because during one of the hardest breakups of my life, I probably listened to this song 132,794,804,257 times. Listening to this makes me want to cry, die, scream, and combust all at the same time.

Madison Beer – “Selfish”

This song came out when I was in an extremely happy relationship. However, it made me feel like I was going through it. The lyrics, the passion in the vocal, the melody — everything is just incredible for listening to during a breakup.

Leah Kate – “10 Things I Hate About You”

One thing you should know about Leah Kate is she knows how to write a breakup smash. When you’re in the mood to look in the mirror and pretend you’re in front of your ex, ripping him to shreds, this is the one. It’s free therapy, to be honest.

Ashe – “Moral of the Story”

Such a unique and cool breakup song that really teaches a good lesson. As Hannah Montana once said, everybody makes mistakes. But we learn from it and hopefully do better next time.
