Becko, Cyberfriend

Becko crushes the social media elite in new track “Cyberfriend”

The world is full of young, rich people trying to be influential on social media apps such as TikTok and Instagram. In his new track “Cyberfriend,” EDM, emo and nü-metal artist Becko, formerly of Hopes Die Last, isn’t having it with the shallow youths of today.

The Italian artist created this song in reaction to the useless idol worship he sees on the internet daily. This electronically rich and socially relevant single is just one of many Becko plans to release this year. Fans will get the full payoff at the end of 2020 with a complete album.

“Cyberfriend” combines rock, EDM and even a few metal elements. Who or what influenced you the most to experiment with genre-mixing?

Since I was a kid, I was listening to nü metal, rock and emo. When I grew up, I started a metalcore band with some of my best friends called Hopes Die Last. We toured the world, and it was one of the best experiences of my life. I’m in this period where I want to try to mix my past and present tastes, including electronic music, trying to make something new and different. I’m still in love with Linkin Park. They were one of my favorite multigenre bands.

Tell us the story behind the song. What personal experiences, if any, inspired you to write and record this track?

I was bored watching Netflix and Instagram feeds, and then I saw a Chiara Ferragni meme that spurred me to watch her “amazing” documentary, [Unposted]. This led me to hate a lot of the new wave of kids that are super rich and famous doing nothing on Instagram, TikTok or YouTube, inspiring someone else to be like them. For the music, I was in that two days Billie Eilish fan phase, so I mixed my emo-rock style with what I’m listening to now.

What was the most challenging part about recording this track? What was the easiest part?

I’ve transferred my recording studio to my house for this quarantine thing, and vocals are recorded in three different studios with three different mics and preamps, so matching them was pretty hard. The easiest part, I think, was the guitars in general. Always a pleasure to record them!

How are you staying creatively in tune with yourself and with your listeners during this period of self-isolation?

I’m not that kind of guy that goes outside to party and shit like that. I feel comfortable being at home with my girl and my dog and my squirrel. It’s my happy place. I’m trying to wake up every day at the same hour to make my music and work for others, too. Being busy is the best thing to do to avoid this shitty period in human history and being productive with what you love the most is perfect.

What do you hope to accomplish this year? What can listeners expect?

On March 29, I was scheduled to go to Tokyo for a fun trip with my girl, and I was going to also play a show in my favorite country, but this quarantine thing didn’t permit me to go and play. I seriously hope I can still go and play new songs from my upcoming album that will be out this year through my label FiXT!
