Those slacker teens ‘Beavis and Butt-Head’ are getting a reboot

2020 appears to be the year of reboots. Earlier this month, Comedy Central announced that the Daria spin-off series Jodie is heading to the network. Now, it appears that Beavis and Butt-Head is also getting a massive reboot.

According to Beavis and Butt-Head creator Mike Judge, the series is making its move from MTV to Comedy Central.

Beavis and Butt-Head originally aired in 1993 and quickly became an MTV staple. The show follows two slacker teens named Beavis and Butt-Head as they go on various adventures and find unique ways of tackling real-life problems.

For the reboot, the two teens will enter a “whole new Gen Z world.” They will take on current-day topics surrounding youth and adolescence. For Judge, he felt that it was finally time to reintroduce the adult animated show to today’s teens and young adults.

“It seemed like the time was right to get stupid again,” Judge says.

Judge is returning as the show’s central force and will write, produce and provide voiceovers for both of the characters.

The show will air on Comedy Central which is home to other animated adult shows including Bojack HorsemanSouth ParkKing of the Hill and more. The Daria spin-off Jodie is also heading to the network.

“We are thrilled to be working with Mike Judge and the great team at 3 Arts again as we double down on adult animation at Comedy Central,” Chris McCarthy, who oversees ViacomCBS’ entertainment and youth group as president, says. “Beavis and Butt-Head were a defining voice of a generation, and we can’t wait to watch as they navigate the treacherous waters of a world light-years from their own.”

The Beavis and Butt-Head reboot will reportedly include two new seasons. As well, Judge will be creating spinoffs and specials of the animated series. At this time, an air date for the reboot has not been released.

The reboot marks the second time Beavis and Butt-Head has been brought back to television. The show originally ended in 1997 after seven seasons. However, MTV revived it for the eighth season in 2011. The film Beavis and Butt-Head Do America was released by Paramount Pictures in 1996. Shortly following this, the spin-off series Daria began airing on MTV in 1997.

Over the years, there has been a massive resurgence in adult animated shows. Programs including Bob’s Burgers, Rick and Morty and Family Guy continue to be a few of the most successful programs today.
