Fred Mascherino, former guitarist and co-vocalist of Taking Back Sunday, has posted a blog reflecting on his time in the band, which he joined 10 years ago this week.

Ten years ago this week, I called Eddie Reyes and talked to him about joining Taking Back Sunday.  Five weeks later I was playing Philly Warped Tour to 18,000 people.  When I first joined the band, I had to stay in Long Island to practice so I stayed at Willie Noon’s parents house.  I’d wake up on the couch and Straylight Run would be practicing in the basement. I gotta admit, seeing John at that time was a little awkward, haha.  Eventually, Eddie got an apartment where I could stay and all we did was practice, write new songs and watch fuse on tv.  If you can remember that far back, all fUSE played that summer was Yellow Card, Story of the Year, Brand New and (unfortunately) Chevelle.  It was a really exciting time in my live and I never forget the fact that my life was forever changed from that call to Eddie.  There are best friends of mine that I have today that I would have never met if I didn’t make that call.  Many of you reading this might have never come to know me.  So, regardless of the drama that always seems to surround the situation, I always look at joining TBS as something great that happened to me.

After the departure of John Nolan and Shaun Cooper, who went on to form Straylight Run with Mascherino's former Breaking Pangaea band mate, Will Noon (now the live drummer for fun.- welcome to the complicated world of the TBS family tree), Mascherino and Matt Rubano were recruited to fill out the lineup ahead of sophomore effort, Where You Want To Be. Fred stayed on for the band's major label debut, Louder Now, which also went on to become Taking Back Sunday's most commercially successful.

In Oct. of 2007, the band announced Fred's departure, later replacing him with Matt Fazzi. Mascherino shifted his full-time focus to solo project The Color Fred, before putting the project on hold to give his full attention to current band, Terrible Things.

In 2010, the Tell All Your Friends-era lineup of Taking Back Sunday reunited, and have continued making music in their "original" incarnation ever since. Mascherino has not collaborated with the group since his departure, but has appeared to be on better terms with the band personally in recent years.

Paramore have been announced as the latest act set to perform at this year's iTunes Festival, Sept. 4 in London.

Tickets for the fest, which takes place at The Roundhouse in Camden Town throughout the entire month of Sept., are free to U.K. residents and available via a raffle system through the iTunes Store.

2013 marks the iTunes Festival's seventh year, and its fifth to be held at The Roundhouse. Other confirmed performers include Thirty Seconds To Mars, Queens Of The Stone Age, Vampire Weekend, Sigur Rós, Kings Of Leon, Phoenix, and Justin Timberlake.

Performances can be streamed live or after-the-fact through the iTunes Festival official app, the iTunes Store, and Apple TV.

AP 300 featuring My Chemical Romance's first AP cover story reimagined by Gerard Way won't be on newsstands much longer, so we're giving you all the more incentive to go out and grab your copy with a preview of the issue's final page--our famed 10 Essential section in playlist form.

There have been plenty of changes in AP’s near three-decade history, but there are some things that still resonate. In our case, it’s the records we discovered while putting together issues during all hours of the day: Those times when one person played a disc, the whole office would hear it, and then proceed to love it (or hate it). Our love of digging for cool music made us quite wary of what other competing magazines were exalting at the time. (Do we gotta keep reminding you AP had been around seven years before Nevermind was released?) Unfortunately, the advent of personal iTunes libraries has completely eroded the idea of one employee dictating the tastes of others. Here’s a partial list of records we’ve kept close to our hearts and our boomboxes to this day, even if the rest of world submerged them into the ether. All this talk of “discs” and “boomboxes” sounds so quaint—even if our selections decidedly aren’t.

Hooray For Boobies

With regards to questionable albums turned popular by relentless (and ironic at first) inner-office plays, one of the most terribly essential examples of this has to be Hooray For Boobies. These obnoxious Pennsylvanian-come-Los Angeles doods’ songs wittily mashed nearly every existing non-PC subject (sex, drugs, people who are different, therefore funny), slathered them with an arsenal of mocking musical styles (’80s new wave, proto-punk, nü metal, ’90s techno) And sprinkled it all with raps tagging about 50 pop-culture references per song (“Buggin’ out like Tori Spelling’s eyes/Deader than the parents on Party Of Five”). The result was such pop-junk gems as “Mope” and “The Bad Touch.” Believe me, we all knew better, but just kept on playing it... (Geffen, 2000) [CB]

Horse Rotorvator

At the dawn of AP, we shared plenty of beautiful, ethereal music from the U.K. Coil were one of the smartest, freakiest and most unsettling imports we were exposed to at that time. While the industrial/art freakshow Horse Rotorvator was released in 1986, it became a passed-down, creepy classic whose sinister tracks continued to scare, corrupt and delight the young, freshly opened staffer's minds. (Trent Reznor’s too, as he offered them a deal on his nothing Records imprint.) Sonic terror collages like “The Anal Staircase” (with its laughing-then-pleading boy samples) only scratched the flesh of the schizophrenic barrage of songs, each as twisted as they were oddly listenable. Happy Days Sweetheart 

Nine Inch Nails’ success opened the floodgates for a ton of opportunists to try their hand at the rhythm ’n’ noise vista of industrial rock—and we heard ’em all. But unlike most of the carpetbaggers in the Los Angeles rock scene, Ethyl Meatplow were sublime, powered by the half-human/half-machine drumming of Harold “Barefoot Biff” Sanders and the arty, charismatic, streetwise and occasionally scatological personas of singers Carla Bozulich and John Napier. Meatplow were onto something far more sinister (“For My Sleeping Lover”), sexier (“Ripened Peach”) and throbbing (“Devil’s Johnson”) than i-rock’s predictable clichés—which probably made the very thought of making a second record too fucking intense, even for them. GIRLS AGAINST BOYS
Cruise Yourself

In the early ’90s, the dual-bass sex machine known as Girls Against Boys’ were adored for their LP, Venus Luxure No. 1 Baby. But it was Cruise Yourself that was far more propulsive, driving and conducive to our needs while proofing pages at 11 p.m. And when frontman/non-sequitur king Scott McCloud gave us a shout-out (“I wanna kill the Alternative Press staff”) during “Kill The Sexplayer” in 104-degree heat at our 10th anniversary show, our hearts expanded like Christina Hendricks’ bust line during puberty. Nineteen years later, and we still think Cruise blows away Venus, while many of our detractors are salad bar technicians at Ruby Tuesday. (Touch And Go, 1994) [JP]

THE GOD MACHINE
Scenes From The Second Storey

In the early ’90s, the best band from the U.K. were actually three stowaways from San Diego who melded indie/post-punk signifiers with epic, near-metal atmospheres. Sure, everyone knows about Isis, Neurosis and Explosions In The Sky; but the God Machine were champions of beguiling atmosphere (“The Desert Song”), dynamic range (“Purity”) and full-on rage (“Out”) 20 years prior. Tragically, bassist Jimmy Fernandez succumbed to a brain aneurysm during the making of their second album, thus ending the band. Scenes From The Second Storey is way out of print, so philosophically, you’re allowed to illegally download it. (Fiction/Polydor, 1993) [JP]

The new trailer for Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues is now out, and it's clear that the film's mustachioed hero, Ron Burgundy, is in for some changes: a new decade (the '80s) and a new town (New York City).

The sequel to the 2004 comedy Anchorman: The Legend Of Ron Burgundy follows Burgundy (Will Ferrell) and the rest of the news team--Brian Fantana (Paul Rudd), Champ Kind (David Koechner) and Brick Tamland (Steve Carell)--travel to New York where Burgandy is recruited to join the new 24-hour news network. Also joining the cast are Kristen Wiig, James Marsden and Harrison Ford.

Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues opens in theaters December 20.

Four years after their previous full-length album, Forget and Not Slow Down, Relient K have announced their return with Collapsible Lung, which is out July 2 on Mono Vs. Stereo.

"Collapsible Lung is a bit of an experimental record for us, but not in the traditional sense of the word," says frontman Matt Thiessen. "We made it a point to pull back all of our usual tricks in the recording process, and forced ourselves to determine how to present each song in the best and most concise way.

"It was a refreshing process, and we feel that much of that energy is transparent in the recording. We are incredibly proud of this record."

Everyone Dies In Utah have announced that they've parted ways with former bassist/vocalist Justin Yost, and Michael Crimlis (formerly of Us, From Outside) has taken his place

"I used to be the vocalist for another band on Tragic Hero, so I've been labelmates with the EDIU dudes for a while and I was always a big fan of their style," Crimlis said in a statement. "When I was offered the position to be their new vocalist it was pretty much a no-brainer." 

According to former vocalist Yost's updated Twitter bio, he is currently working on a solo record.

The song "Final Thoughts" from Major League's latest album Hard Feelings is a reflection on what truly matters in life. 

"When I'm laying on my death bed, it's not going to matter what kind of car I'm driving or how big my house is," says ML guitarist/vocalist Brian Anthony Joyce. "It's the experiences and memories we've made that I get to take to the grave with me. If all of this ended tomorrow than we've been extremely blessed with the opportunities we've been given. That's what both this song and video mean to us."

AP and Spotify have partnered today to bring you the first listen to Pick Up Your Head, the latest album by AP Recommended artist Middle Class Rut.

Vocalist/guitarist Zack Lopez says that his childhood played an integral part in the formation of the album.

"My Dad is a Mexican immigrant from Mozambique. I grew up having to wrap his legs in seaweed bulb strands because his blood flow had diminished due to diabetes. The walks from the beach to his bedside felt like miles, and he'd scream, "Recoge Tu Cabeza!" over and over. I never knew how to speak spanish.

"In between the last tour we did as part of the No Name No Color campaign and the first studio sessions we had going into LP2, my Aunt Betty mailed me a box of Hi8 video tapes. Most of them were snuff reenactment scenes from the Nic Cage movie 8MM. Everything else was clips from my childhood. That began the inspiration behind the concept that would become Pick Up Your Head."

The Body Rampant are streaming their debut single "Underachiever" on Soundcloud. The Los Angeles-based alternative indie group will release their first album, Midnight Mayfair, on July 16. It was produced by Brian McTernan (Circa Survive, Thrice, Polar Bear Club) and is available for pre-order here. 

The album is a concept record about an "alternate universe that a man enters after he dies." The masks shown were designed by artist Duane Flatmo and represent the various characters that come to life at midnight in the fictional town of Mayfair, hence the title.

Today Sony Pictures announced that two more Spider-Man movies will follow next year's The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The third installment will hit theaters June 10, 2016 and the fourth film will open May 4, 2018.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the follow-up to 2012's The Amazing Spider-Man, is currently filming and will once again star Andrew Garfield as the web-slinging superhero and Emma Stone as his leading lady Gwen Stacy.

The Amazing Spider-Man grossed about $35 million dollars on its opening day, setting a record for the highest Tuesday opening. The movie went on to make $750-plus million worldwide.

The track is on his upcoming album, Genuine & Counterfeit, which will be released August 20.

It's official: The much talked about Boy Meets World spinoff is coming to television. Disney Channel has given a series order to Girl Meets World, which centers on Riley Matthews (played by newcomer Rowan Blanchard), the daughter of Corey and Topanga, played by original cast members Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel. The series is set to begin filming this summer in Los Angeles and is expected to air next year.

Savage and Fishel will also be reunited with Boy Meets World creator/executive producer Michael Jacobs. Fans can also expect to see William Daniels (that's Mr. Feeny to you), at least for the first episode. Rider Strong, who played Corey's rebelious best friend Shawn Hunter, and Will Friedle, who played Corey's kooky older brother Eric, have been spotted on set as well.

Girl Meets World is set in New York City and follows seventh grader Riley and her best friend Maya, played by Sabrina Carpenter, as they navigate middle school. (Sound familiar?) Cory works as a history teacher at the girls' school, and Topanga owns an after-school hangout. 

Here's what Jacobs had to say about the show in January to The Hollywood Reporter: "The appeal to me was exactly the same appeal that I had in doing the original, which is that I look around at the landscape and I look at my children and what is on television for them, and there are very few shows that are like this, what we aspire this show to be... The thing that delineates this show is that I don’t want this to be anything except the natural experience of actually growing up in this current world... The stories we intend on doing are stories about a real girl who is coming of age. The beauty of this show is the girl will have two parents whom the world has already watched come of age and their natural confusion in the next step of Cory and Topanga’s own evolution: being parents. I’m looking at what the condition of the world is right now for kids who are growing up, and if we can offer the same sort of guidance and entertainment that Boy Meets World offered, then the show is a good thing to do right now."

The 5th annual Epicenter Festival in Irvine, CA has announced that The Offspring, A Day To Remember, Bad Religion, Pennywise and All Time Low are among the bands that will be playing the festival.

Other acts include: Pierce The Veil, Falling In Reverse, and The Wonder Years.

The 1-day festival will take place September 21, 2013. Pre-sale tickets will be available June 21 at 10 AM, PST.

The creators of Guitar Center Sessions are musicians themselves, so they have a very clear goals in mind when it comes to their nationally aired program: The want it to be the best sounding music show on the air, they want to give artists a platform to expose their music and they want to bypass the usual sensationalist television schtick.

“We wanted to make this show about the art,” says Executive Producer of 'Sessions, Dustin Hinz. “We're musicians so we [wanted to make it so] when you watch the show, you're actually inspired to pick up an instrument.”

To do that, they recruit artists that, as Hinz says “have a sincere level of musicianship.” And if you want to find artists that still play their instruments and write their own songs in a musical climate saturated with vocal-based pop music, you need look no further than our scene.

“Bands like Frank Turner and Asking Alexandria and Alkaline Trio [who are all featured on this season of Guitar Center Sessions] are inspiring the next generation of musicians the same way that a guy like Joe Walsh might have—a nd to this day still does, but definitely did back in the ‘60s and ‘70s when he was the same age as the bands today.”

Today, we’re giving you a preview of this Friday’s session, featuring Alkaline Trio with a performance clip of their classic and fan-beloved “Cringe,” the opening track from the band’s debut full-length, Goddamnit!.

“[Cringe] is a pretty fun, high-energy tune, and the few fans we had at the time [we released it] really responded to it,” says Alkaline Trio vocalist/bassist Dan Andriano. “I love playing it to this day because it reminds me of that energy and the connection we began to share with the crowd, which is something we've strived to maintain to this day.”

Of collaborating with Guitar Center for the session, Andriano adds:

“Besides stopping by multiple Guitar Centers on every tour we've ever done, we were fortunate enough to do "Live At Guitar Center" last year. It was an acoustic performance and fun, but we were excited to come back for a full plugged in set on Guitar Center Sessions around the release of our new record, My Shame Is True.

“We are fans of the show and it was on our wish list, so when the opportunity came up, we jumped on it. The performances of the new songs are the first time those were played live, actually.”

An Elway song likened to a '90s R&B cat-fight duet? Well, that's a first. When describing the song "Prophetstown" for AP, vocalist and songwriter Tim Browne said, "It’s like a schizophrenic version of 'The Boy Is Mine' by Monica and Brandy." Uhm. "No wait… It’s my spiteful, gloomy extrapolation of Shakespeare’s 'My tongue and soul in this be hypocrites.'"

That's more like it. Nonetheless, we can see some similarities in that the song features a guest vocalist. The Brandy to Elway's Monica in the song is Leo Vergnetti from Captain, We're Sinking, who lends his pipes to the chorus.

Browne continues, "'Prophetstown' is a song about being torn between two things that you love which are in diametrical opposition to one another, being thereafter unable to reconcile the two and in turn resenting both.  In my case, it’s my friendship, home life, and comfort versus the prospect of playing in a punk band all over the world."
