Another day, another Stroke gone solo
Nickel Eye - The Time Of The AssassinsAlternative Press - Editorial Intern on 7/7/09 @ 5:18 PM - altpress.com
Two awe-inspiring Albert Hammond Jr., albums and one breezy little side band for Fabrizio Moretti later, Strokes bassist Nikolai Fraiture steps out as Nickel Eye and the wait for a Stroke to embarrass himself with a laughable solo debacle continues. Fraiture tries his hand at a number of interesting detours, from the jagged art-funk groove of "Intro (Every Time)" to the album-closing Leonard Cohen cover "Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye." Mostly, it works, from the old-timey "This Is The End" to the tracks with the British Invasion harmonica. The only major misstep is the overdose of bad-boy attitude on "Back From Exile," where Fraiture sneers, "Hello, motherfuckers," like he thinks he's Iggy Pop. He's not.
