Come up for air
Great Lake Swimmers - Lost ChannelsAlternative Press - Editorial Intern on 8/6/09 @ 4:58 PM - altpress.com
Drawing its name from a mysterious water passage in Thousand Islands, Ontario, in Great Lake Swimmers' native Canada, Lost Channels is as haunting as it is organic. Clearly inspired by the historic and gorgeous landscapes of the region where the band recorded portions of the album, GLS toe a careful line between indie folk and banjo-laced country on their fourth full-length. Songwriter Tony Dekker's airy vocals keep the disc's 12 tracks floating atop delicate guitars, pedal steel and violins, as on the uptempo highlight, "Pulling On A Line." The Swimmers give themselves and their listeners plenty of breathing room on the gently flowing "River's Edge" before closing the album with the near-lullaby "Unison Falling Into Harmony." Though some tracks lull more than thrill, that seems to be the goal. (NETTWERK; nettwerk.com) Jennifer Grathwol
