Get your rocks off
Living Things - Habeas CorpusAlternative Press - Editorial Intern on 7/7/09 @ 5:13 PM - altpress.com
Although Living Things recorded their second disc at the legendary Hansa Studios in Berlin, Germany-the place where David Bowie, Iggy Pop and Depeche Mode crafted mopey masterpieces-Habeas Corpus is anything but a sonic downer. In fact, Corpus feels like the album Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Primal Scream have been trying (and failing) to write for years. Sharp guitar riffs and swaggering drums strut behind Lillian Berlin's distorted growls, as the band veer between bluesy desert-rock ("Island In Your Heart"), synth-dappled post-punk (the standout "Oxygen") and BRMC-esque fuzzbombs ("Let It Rain"). The lyrics can be heavy-handed-images of greed, violence and the apocalypse dominate, with varying levels of success-but the danceable beats and grungy atmosphere make Corpus the ideal soundtrack for debauchery in the face of economic depression.
