Rage against the machines
Architect - Ghost Of The Salt Water MachinesAlternative Press - Editorial Intern on 7/6/09 @ 3:45 PM - altpress.com
Architect's 2007 debut All Is Not Lost throbbed with the sort of visceral musical and lyrical antipathy that made '90s metalcore innovators Deadguy such a revelation. The band aimed their loathing toward a corrupt and collapsing society, torn apart by venality and ignorance. Its follow-up, Ghost Of The Salt Water Machines, continues the squalid musical tantrums and throat-shred vocal attack, with down-tuned sludge guitars and drums that sound like they're exploding. "Camelot In Smithereens" boasts at least four different passages that could qualify as songs unto themselves; that the band can thread them seamlessly together is a testament to their exceptional abilities. Yet the album loses some power given the incessant assault; perhaps that was their mission, to exact an unrelenting oppression of the senses. Architect don't deviate from their musical rulebook, which is a shame, since they would benefit from breaking those rules. (BLACK MARKET ACTIVITIES; blackmarketactivities.com) Casey Boland
