A masterwork of indie-weird

Swan Lake - Enemy Mine

[4.5/5]
If Swan Lake's first release, 2006's Beast Moans, was an elemental ascent into the avant-indie ether, Enemy Mine, the band's sophomore effort, is a hot-blooded return to terra firma for the super-trio of Spencer Krug (Wolf Parade, Sunset Rubdown), Dan Bejar (Destroyer, the New Pornographers) and Carey Mercer (Frog Eyes, Blackout Beach). But these Canucks have done more than simply plant both feet firmly on the ground; they've given their songs a spine. Stark and deliberate, menageries of vocals ricochet irresistibly ("Spanish Gold, 2044") between reverb, piano and floor toms ("Settle On Your Skin") and stripped-down Americana ("Paper Lace"). That track, plus the haunting "A Hand At Dusk," complete with its swelling cosmic synth epilogue, will forever change your appreciation for the knee-length checkered dress.
