The Video Dead - Damn DiscoAlternative Press - Scott Heisel on 11/5/09 @ 7:00 AM - altpress.com
With members pulling double-duty in rock troupe Saint Alvia, the Video Dead hadn't kicked out their blend of SoCal punk melody and old-school NYHC aggression since 2005's Brotherhood Of The Dead. But with fatherhood entering the Alvia realm and members taking time to pursue individual projects, the Video Dead entered the studio to track demos early this year. The two songs that emerged from that session, the Jawbox-y "Mexemo" and pure Bronx "Cry Me A Rivers Cuomo," offered a new hope for brutal good times in Southern Ontario. Both appear in epic new form on Damn Disco, alongside hardcore anthems-in-waiting like "The Stakes Are High, But So Are We," with its driving gang-vocal chorus of "This ain't no bullshit rock 'n' roll/This is how we're supposed to be," and album standout "Let's Dance," a track that highlights the band's penchant for good arrangements, great breakdowns, and memorable vocal hooks. If you like loud music and being cool, listen to this record. (UNION LABEL GROUP) Sam Sutherland
