Theo And The Skyscrapers - So Many Ways To DiePosted by Rachel Lux on 28-Nov-07 @ 05:17 PM
[4/5]Theo Kogan is a New York City rock luminary, having spent the better part of two decades fronting the semi-legendary proto-riot grrrls Lunachicks. Not content with simply being history, she assembled the Skyscrapers (including ex-Toilet Boy Sean Pierce on guitar) in 2005, and the group's self-released sophomore album shows that aging scenesters can learn a thing or two from the new generation. Those expecting snarling guitars should look elsewhere; So Many Ways To Die throbs and sways with grooves 'n' 'tude not unlike the sounds proffered on the last Le Tigre disc (without the political overtones) or the current crop of dance-punkers (without the retro sheen). Although this change of heart could be viewed as a musical mid-life crisis for Kogan, memorable hooks such as on the synth-tastic "Jealousy Died" or the crunchy "City Of The Witch" proves even the originators can learn a trick or two-and excel while they're at it.
