Electronica for hipsters.

Dntel - Dumb Luck

[3/5] It's hard to keep track of all of Jimmy Tamborello's numerous projects and monikers. While each have somewhat of a different sound, occasionally they sort of blur into one-an understandable side effect, considering the volume of output. Dumb Luck is Tamborello's third release under the Dntel alias, and his first for the mostly indie-rock label Sub Pop. While you can still hear traces of his past work, Luck mostly leans toward the tag of folk-tronica. Sounding quite rich and organic for a record made mostly from computers, it's clear Tamborello has a knack for melding man (or woman) and machine. Guest appearances by Jenny Lewis on "Roll On" and Conor Oberst on "Breakfast In Bed" are especially strong, but it's the Portishead-esque collaboration with Mia Doi Todd on "Rock My Boat" that really shines. But as with the Postal Service's Give Up (Tamborello's gold-selling claim to fame), Dumb Luck is likely to appeal more to the indie-rock crowd than electronica purists. (SUB POP) Eddie Fleisher
