Look behind the curtain.
Josh Haden - Devoted
[3/5] Unless you were a fan of Spain, Josh Haden's band from the '90s, you're probably not all that aware of him. In fact, you're probably more familiar with one of his sisters-Petra, Rachel and Tanya-from such bands as that dog and the Rentals. Oh, yeah, his dad Charlie just happens to be a legendary jazz bassist, too. The guy's got some big shoes to fill, and on the first listen, his debut solo LP isn't going to jump out at anyone. After several spins, though, Devoted begins to win the listener over. Produced by Dan the Automator and with guest spots from Kid Koala and John Medeski, Devoted works because of their contributions, which weave a backdrop of smooth jazz, sultry R&B, laid-back pop and a hint of trip-hop. Haden's vocals, while not spectacular, work in an odd way-sort of a geeky-yet-soulful delivery. However, it's pretty clear that the magic is happening behind the scenes. (DIAMOND SOUL) Eddie Fleisher
