Resolutely unhip, but still ass-kicking.
Static-X - Cannibal
[3.5/5] The mere existence of Static-X's fifth studio album for Warner Bros. clearly implies that somebody out there is anxiously awaiting their latest mechanistic thrash-blast. And based on this sonic evidence, the folks who stopped paying attention after
Wisconsin Death Trip have been missing out. The lyrics on
Cannibal are basically place-holders, and the songs are nearly indistinguishable from one another, but Wayne Static's voice-somewhere between Jonathan Davis, Disturbed's David Draiman and the late comedian Sam Kinison-is attention-getting in a drill sergeant/auctioneer sort of way. And the relentless riffs and pummeling drums, leavened with occasional dashes of electronics, perfectly soundtrack the first-person shooter video game playing in your head. It's lazy to judge a record in the context of the larger rock scene, but in a time of 5,000 faceless screamo bands and some kind of weird band-geeks-go-prog mini-explosion (My Chemical Romance, Panic! At The Disco), crunchy electro-thrash sounds fucking great.
