A night at the opera.
Iamx - The Alternative
[3.5/5] IAMX-aka Chris Corner of U.K. trip-hop trio Sneaker Pimps-is living in Berlin these days, and you can hear that city bleeding through on any number of the more dramatic moments on
The Alternative, from the foreboding waltz of "President," a lead-off track that makes the most of Corner's operatic tendencies, to "Spit It Out," a brooding blip-pop cut with a chorus straight out of the '80s. Then there's "Lulled By Numbers," a chillingly Bowie-esque ballad that finds Corner wondering, "If this is a lullaby, then why am I not sleeping easy?" Not every song dwells in the shadows; Corner actually sings about clicking his heels to the throbbing electro-funk rhythm of "Nightlife." And he definitely has a kinky side. But it's the big dramatic ballads, particularly "Lulled By Numbers," that hit the hardest.
