The ever-evolving sound of white noise.

White Flight - White Flight

[3.5/5] To call Justin Roelofs' solo project White Flight a departure from his work in the Anniversary is to profoundly underestimate the degree this album deviates from his former outfit's shaggily melodic psychedelic-rock template. It's more of a stratospheric launch-one allegedly abetted by Peruvian hallucinogens-into a parallel musical universe populated by kaleidoscopic hybrids. At times, White Flight resembles quirky falsetto funkateer Bobby Conn interpreting chamber-pop savant Daniel Johnston's warped-Beatles hooks over Beck's breakbeats. But the album also incorporates shaman chants, power drills, hip-hop rhythms (both organic drum-driven jams and icy bass-and-piano interludes), stark acoustic folk, synthesizer crescendos, arcade bleeps, guitar fuzz and tinny sampled brass. Roelofs coos and whimpers, his quivering voice more of a potential deal-breaker than the aggressive eclecticism. These collages don't form a cohesive whole, and the relentless eccentricity eventually becomes exhausting. Track by track, though, this is riveting esoterica. (RANGE LIFE) Andrew Miller
