The re-birth of garage.

The Mooney Suzuki - Have Mercy

[3/5] It's been a hard slog for New York City's the Mooney Suzuki, what with lineup changes, label woes and coming down from the verge of near-garage rock superstardom. So it's more than a little surprising that this record sounds like so much fun. "99%" is all hand claps and soaring gospel vocals that turn a melancholy Beatles-style "nah-nah-nah" into a triumphant chorus. "Rock 'N' Roller Girl" is a soulful, jokey tearjerker about getting older, and "First Comes Love" could've been played at a dance party in any of the last 50 years. On the whole, the songs are more tuneful and airy and less spastic than previous riot-on-the-stage efforts. The Moonies have always paid careful attention to rock 'n' roll's history-mod, Motown, the Rolling Stones-but for the first time, it seems like they've finally learned from their own.
