Irish rockers play it safe-again.
The Frames - The Cost
[3/5] Nothing has changed for the Frames. Their sixth album,
The Cost, still has the requisite violin on most every track that kicks up the urgency of Glen Hansard's voice. They were smart to record the album live (with no overdubs) to help bring out their raw sound, but it's a bit unfortunate that the Irishmen decided to keep their songwriting and musical prowess stagnant. All the songs are enjoyable enough, with "Sad Songs" being the only dud-it contains the unfortunate line "Too many sad words makes a sad, sad song." (No, really?) But fear not, minor redemption is to be had in "True," whose lone guitar entry slowly builds to pure emotive brilliance. Marketa Irglova's whispy vocals at the end make it one of the most painful songs ever. Too bad the whole album couldn't have been this moving.
