Two Slipknot members choose rock over metal.

[4/5] Perhaps it's foolish to expect any less from two members of Slipknot, but in today's anemic rock scene, Stone Sour's raw power is a damn pleasant surprise. Their second disc,
Come What(ever) May, builds on their debut's strengths, allowing frontman Corey Taylor to drop his mask in more ways than one. Always an underrated lyricist, Taylor's way with imagery really comes out on "Made Of Scars" and "Your God." Even power ballads like "Zzyzx Rd." showcase genuine and thoughtful songcraft. But it's the faster tracks that make Stone Sour the masters of ass-kicking. The first single, "30/30-150" (whatever that means), starts things off with a bang, with new drummer Roy Mayorga punching the band forward as Taylor bellows his rage toward the rafters. Guitarist James Root's solos betray deeper blues and hard-rock influences than Slipknot's discography has ever indicated; these guys were born to rock dive bars and packed, sweaty clubs. And while intricate technical displays are kept to a minimum, soul and guts explode from every track on this disc. In a better America, Stone Sour would be the face of American rock. But at a time where Nickelback can lift $12 million from this country and hop back over the border, America, probably can't handle the real roaring deal.
