Snazzy tunes that a mother could love.
Say Hi To Your Mom - Impeccable BlahsPosted by Tim Karan on 04-Oct-06 @ 07:11 PM
[3/5] Between the silly MILF-toast moniker and smarmy self-proclamations on their website (how the band "simultaneously defies and enforces physics"), Say Hi To Your Mom don't exactly put their best foot forward. Fortunately, the group's self-released fourth disc, Impeccable Blahs, lacks such pretense. Minimalist droning synth pop best described as "pleasant" collides with starkly modern ritual cynicism. For some inexplicable reason, Blahs has recurring vampire references (the self-explanatory "These Fangs," and the plodding "Blah Blah Blah," whose whispered chorus promises to drink your blood), yet there's nothing overtly gothic here, especially "Not As Goth As They Say We Are," which comes off a lot more Ween than scream. Impeccable Blahs is the musical equivalent of Michael Ian Black and Mo Rocca: they're drier than the Sahara and smart-alecky for sure, but they're plain-ol' smart at the same time.
