Alt-country supergroup deliver another fine album.

[3/5] What's surprising about Golden Smog isn't that they write remarkable songs in the classic alt-pop mold, it's that they're still doing it. The erstwhile supergroup-which, in their current incarnation, involves members of the Jayhawks, Wilco, Soul Asylum, Big Star and Run Westy Run-have been going at it since 1992, and the songs on
Another Fine Day are almost good enough to appear on any of the records made during the band members' day jobs. Jeff Tweedy's "Long Time Ago" is a shocking, acoustic-guitar driven sibling lament; Dan Murphy (or is it Gary Louris?) sings "Hurricane" with a roar approximating Katrina. There's no sense of cohesion here, but that shouldn't be surprising: Even a longtime supergroup know when they finally get together, it's just a chance to blow off steam.
