A stoner-rock Lullaby.

Casket Salesmen - Sleeping Giants

[3/5] On A Static Lullaby's 2005 sophomore disc, Faso Latido, there were two opposing forces at play: one anchored to the band's hardcore underpinnings, the other just itching to rock. Then-bassist Phil Pirrone was in the latter camp, and following a horrific car crash that nearly killed him, eventually abdicated ASL with guitarist Nate Lindeman to form Casket Salesmen. Guided by a sort of jam-band ethos, Pirrone and friends have created a malleable stoner-rock collective whose talents far outreach the members' individual back catalogues. Throughout their debut, Lindeman flexes thick, sludgy rock chops, smartly punctuated by saxophones, trombones and countless overdubs that keep Sleeping Giants' near-instrumental rock interesting. Though it sometimes struggles for direction, the album shows that Pirrone's absorbed his parents' Pink Floyd records and came away unintimidated-which ain't as easy as it sounds.
