Death is not the end-but maybe it should be.
Voivod - KatorzPosted by Tim Karan on 04-Oct-06 @ 06:10 PM
[3/5] How's this for a bummer: Just prior to the recording of Voivod's 14th album, guitar genius Denis "Piggy" D'Amour drops dead from colon cancer, leaving his bandmates with no guitar player and a laptop full of guitar tracks that, while hooky, streamlined and recorded well enough to use on said album, aren't exactly what you want from Voivod if Dimension Hatross and Nothingface are your jams. But why speak ill of the dead? Piggy is gone, rest his French-Canadian soul, and naturally, the remaining members-drummer Michel "Away" Langevin, vocalist Denis "Snake" Belanger and bassist Jason "Jasonic" Newsted-feel obligated to carry the torch of their fallen friend (which is why there will be at least one more Voivod album). And while Katorz is mired in the monotony of Belanger's nasal whine and an anachronistic stoner-groove redux, it's not all bad. At the very least, "Odds & Frauds" and "Red My Mind" scream out from Piggy's grave as jarring reminders of the atonal powerhouse that Voivod once were and-for some-always will be. (THE END) J. Bennett
