Betrayed - SubstancePosted by Tim Karan on 04-Oct-06 @ 05:26 PM
[4/5] Since Betrayed's lineage features former members of defunct straight-edge torchbearers Carry On and Champion (as well as Terror), it's sort of unavoidable that they'll receive those comparisons. While it's hard to deny the similarities to those bands, neither Carry On or Champion, had much of a fluid understanding of mid-'80s emo as Betrayed does. This is fast straight-edge hardcore, no doubt, with so many nods to Dag Nasty and Embrace, it's surprising the band didn't throw their necks out during recording. "Consequence" and the title track make up some of the album's effortless fist-pumpers, juxtaposing the by-genre-standard reflections of "Bring It To Life" and "A Light In The Dark," both of which contain guitars and endearing vocals that sound sampled from an album two decades old. Hardcore kids with their heart at least partially on their long-sleeves, take note. (EQUAL VISION) Brian Shultz
