[4/5] Okay, let's get this out of the way: No album in the world could live up to the hype Tom DeLonge has created around Angels & Airwaves' debut, We Don't Need To Whisper. That being said, if you're one of the lucky few not yet run over by the Blink-182 guitarist's hype train (or you've just emerged from under that rock in your backyard), you're in for more than a pleasant surprise: Whisper's 10 tracks encompass everything a rock band should be in 2006. Musically, there's no real gimmick here; just lush instrumentation ("A Little's Enough" and "Do It For Me Now," the latter sounding like the sequel to Blink's "Down"), chunky arena-rock riffing ("It Hurts," "The War") and some of the best anthems U2 forgot to include on include on The Joshua Tree ("The Adventure," "The Gift"). DeLonge's lyrics are grandiose in nature, tackling war, space travel, God, love and death (most being used as thinly veiled metaphors for the dissolution of Blink), but they're never too heavy or thought provoking--which is kind of the point. While the lyrics might be DeLonge at his most soul-searching, the music is built for nothing smaller than football stadiums, and we all know what kind of crappy PA systems those have for vocals.
