Whirlwind Heat - Types Of Wood

[3/5] Whirlwind Heat are best known for being the first band signed to Jack White's Third Man imprint--but the Michigan trio may also have been the first band to leave. Can you really expect to tame a group this frenetic, though? Their last album, 2004's Flamingo Honey, was a collection of 10 one-minute songs. Conversely, Types Of Wood doesn't stick to a theme; instead, it rages all over the place in a bouillabaisse of vintage basement punk, scuzzy bass lines and bizarre lyrics that go from covering topics from sperm donation to simply singing the ABCs. And while the overall sound is more reined in this time around (think Beck and Cake, as opposed to Devo and Gang Of Four), the band's anti-everything style can get annoying if you don't have the patience for heavy doses of idiosyncrasy in your rock. If you're looking for something a little bent, however, Whirlwind Heat far from blow. (BRILLE) J.R. Griffin
