Supergroup, super album.
The Raconteurs - Broken Boy SoldiersPosted by Editorial Intern on 01-Jun-06 @ 12:53 PM
[5/5] Okay, maybe that's overstating things: The Raconteurs aren't so much a supergroup as they are a super-hip group, with a lineup comprising the White Stripes' Jack White, singer-songwriter Brendan Benson and two dudes from the Greenhornes. Yeah, they'd better kick ass. Any suspicions are quickly squashed by Broken Boy Soldiers' 10 near-perfect jams, including the sort of blues/funk you'd expect from White ("Level"), some high-as-a-kite Beatles-esque ballads ("Together"), and heady/heavy psychedelic-rock trips that would make Led Zeppelin stand up and take notice ("Blue Veins"). They deliver the straight-ahead rocking tunes, too, with a one-two punch of scrappy enthusiasm and unmatched musical proficiency. But the real pleasure here is hearing what Jack White can do when he's away from the set confines of the White Stripes. It's amazing--and it must make Meg damned jealous.
