Cannibalizing the past? Cool with us.
The Essex Green - Cannibal SeaPosted by Editorial Intern on 24-May-06 @ 02:59 PM
[3/5] There's a fine line between throwback and throwaway, but on their third album, Brooklyn-based indie-pop collective the Essex Green do a fine job of staying on retro's good side. Cannibal Sea finds chief songsmiths Chris Ziter, Sasha Bell and Jeff Baron (plus collaborators) embracing classic pop sounds without being smothered by them (something that, unfortunately, can't be said about many of the band's old Elephant 6 crew). Even with their heads cocked toward the past--and, for Bell, toward Natalie Merchant--the trio weave plenty of present-day threads into Cannibal Sea: Belle And Sebastian, the Posies and Stereolab are a few that come to mind. Those bands were also pelted with "retro" tags when they started out, but they've all since become popular reference points. If they continue to make music this solid, the Essex Green could enjoy a similar fate.
