Cannibal Corpse - KillPosted by Editorial Intern on 24-May-06 @ 01:43 PM
[4/5] If we ever go to an all-MP3 society and the concept of album-as-artifact goes out the window, Cannibal Corpse will be one of the few acts to benefit. Toss out the group's illicit album artwork and ignore their lyrics (essentially a series of internal monologues from the most heinous slasher movies never made), and--especially in their latter period, with George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher on vocals--you've got some of the most artful death metal being made today. Really, it's almost a shame the band hired Hate Eternal guitarist Erik Rutan to produce this, their 10th studio album. Between his deft hand, Fisher's screeching diversity and the band's nimble playing, Kill isn't just a brutal masterwork; it's also a great-sounding record, crammed with a finessed mix of bowel-loosening riffs, metronome-shattering bpm levels ("The Discipline Of Revenge") and squiggling, atonal solos ("Infinite Misery" gives even Morbid Angel a run for their money). As it is, however, the cover art will probably be banned in 15 countries, the lyrics will inspire Christian moms to protest, and some pimply sociopath with a Tom Savini moustache will just read this review and go, "Fag." Bummer.
