MGMT/The Whigs sideman takes a welcome step into the spotlight

Hank Sullivant isn't shy about coming out from behind two successful bands, MGMT and the Whigs, to bring the world his music. In fact, Paris starts off schizophrenically firing on all cylinders. Sure, the first three tracks have those reverb-soaked vocals that are getting old in the world of pretentious indie rock, but they also have gloriously overblown drums and guitar solos, propulsive piano cadences and enormous hooks. At their best, Kuroma bring some much-needed humility to a scene that often feels like a party where everyone is too damn awesome to be any fun. Although Sullivant's "everything but the kitchen sink into the echo chamber" attitude dulls some of the tracks, Paris eventually finds its footing in an epic Brian Wilson-esque closing suite that could go on for hours and still leave you anxious for more.
