Ramshackle rhythms fuel this post-Thunderdome grim-hop.
Oddateee - Halfway HomelessAlternative Press - Steven Robertshaw on 3/16/09 @ 5:20 PM - altpress.com
Hailing from Union City, New Jersey-the grimy, dispiritingly gray Latin ghetto situated on the Hudson's shore like Manhattan's backwash-Oddateee feels at home in tinny clatter, cluttered with noisy, bottom-scraping beats propelled more by faltering will than consistent rhythm. His follow-up to 2001's Steely Darkglasses retains the spooky, sputtering swagger and multi-syllabic word salad of his debut, sounding like Esham schooled in Dälek's skeletal leftfield rap. Halfway Homeless hails Oddateee's hometown streets, opening with the declaration, "The crack rock sold in my district is terrific," over a creepy piano line. He shouts out to his people on "Ricans" (a track driven by sawing cello), surveys "The Hood," and rides a gypsy shuffle through album highlight, "Devil Runs Nation." While the rhymes are sometimes overly verbose, the backing music sweats urban decay. (DEAD VERSE) Chris Parker
