Madlib vs. Madlib: And the winner is...?
Madvillain - Madvillainy 2: The Madlib RemixAlternative Press - Steven Robertshaw on 3/16/09 @ 5:16 PM - altpress.com
The ideal listener for this album would be someone who's never heard Madvillainy, the 2004 pairing of rapper MF Doom and superproducer Madlib, that's now considered an underground hip-hop classic. That person could appreciate Madlib's rethink of the entire disc on its own considerable merits, and would likely be impressed by the short, sometimes sharp, soul-and-jazz remakes he offers (all retitled; some even with alternate vocal tracks), which add up to a more-than-fair mixtape. Unfortunately, since almost everyone who cares probably owns the original, Madvillainy 2 is doomed to lose the inevitable comparison to Madlib's earlier work. It's hard not to wish the understandably impatient producer had held onto some of the better pieces, like the horn-blasting "Boulder Holder," for the day when the missing-in-action Doom comes in from the cold to make the long-awaited sequel.
