For the past 10 years, film school dropout Owen Ashworth has carved a niche for himself with his unique brand of lo-fi pop under the nom de plume Casiotone For The Painfully Alone. He sings catchy, melancholy lyrics over a backdrop of fuzzy keyboards and busted drum-machine beats. Town Topic merges together his love of music and cinema, serving as the soundtrack for Laurel Nakadate's film, Stay The Same Never Change. Much of the EP is instrumental-some reconstructed from older material, some entirely new. The music works well as a score, creating a subtly emotional vibe that leaves the listener (or filmmaker) to fill in the blanks. For fans of Ashworth's vocals, the disc does feature two new tracks directly inspired by the film: "Ice Cream Truck" and "Green Cotton Sweater (Version)." Ashworth may have quit film school, but Town Topic is proof he still has a place in movies. (TOMLAB) Eddie Fleisher
