Grinding toward a grim future.
Beneath The Massacre - DystopiaAlternative Press - Steven Robertshaw on 3/16/09 @ 4:41 PM - altpress.com
By titling their latest release Dystopia, Beneath The Massacre provide a concise summary of their bleak lyrical content, freeing casual fans from having to decipher Elliot Desgagnés' agitated growls. The album's lone enunciated phrase ("no future") occurs during a relatively slow-paced interlude, offering 45 seconds of sludgy respite from the laser-fight guitars, guttural burbles and rapid-fire blastbeats. Dystopia's triplet solos and double-bass drumbeats surge like turbulent whitewater, with staggered breakdowns giving sonic rafters something solid to grasp before they're swept away by the unceasing currents of technicality. Listeners might not remember individual tracks (they're hard to differentiate at these speeds), but they'll remember key moments-an impossibly fluid sweep solo, a ferocious isolated Desgagnés grunt, a tense rhythmic build-up-as well as an overarching feeling of either worshipful awe or profound fatigue, depending on their personal thresholds for relentless virtuosity.
