Becoming The Archetype - Dichotomy

Back in 1967, Elvis Presley earned a Best Sacred Performance Grammy for his interpretation of "How Great Thou Art." On Dichotomy, Becoming The Archetype give that hymn an explosive hardcore makeover. Dichotomy swells with symphonic keyboards and choral echoes, but producer Devin Townsend (Strapping Young Lad) ensures the album sounds grand instead of bombastic. Becoming The Archetype can be impressively heavy, with some bulging riffs, twinkling solos and pummeling drums, yet calmer passages-the enrapturing piano-and-crystalline-guitar coda to the opening track "Mountain Of Souls," and the electro-funk breakdown that adds a futuristic ambiance to "Deep Heaven"-provide the album's most emotionally compelling moments. Singer Jason Wisdom shouts with genuine passion, but vocal cameos from Townsend and Demon Hunter frontman Ryan Clark demonstrate how a cleaner vocal approach might work well with this eclectic, often melodic material.
