[4/5]
Fresh off their finest individual work in a decade, this complementary pairing produces an album bubbling with vitality, adventure and catchy melodies. Though written and recorded quickly, it's hard to imagine how these tracks could have been improved on, as they effortlessly cover a wide musical expanse. The energy never flags from the mournful opener, "Mystery," which echoes to somber gait of prolific singer-songwriter Vic Chesnutt's last release, North Star Deserter, to the wavering, Low-era David Bowie glam of "Stop The Horse," and the explosive, psych-tinged rave-up "Little Fucker." Though only nine tracks, there's not a throwaway in the bunch, highlighted by the infectious, jangling power-pop whimsy of "Bilocating Dog." After hewing the pop line, the album closes with a pair of seven-minute tracks, including "The Mad Passion Of The Stoic," sketching simmering longing and slow-burn anomie that's "so easy to accept, but so hard to understand."
