For 30 years, Nurse With Wound mastermind Steven Stapleton has massaged nearly every musical style imaginable into Dadaistic grotesqueries. He's built a rabid cult following for his mad montages of esoteric music and wry genre-subversion. Now with the help of Andrew Liles and other oddballs, Stapleton mutates lounge music to his own demented ends on Huffin' Rag Blues-yet it's surprisingly accessible (for NWW, anyway). "Groove Grease (Hot Catz)" with its suave Hammond B-3 organ and cool shimmer of vibes could even be homage to Blue Note-style soul jazz. But "The Funktion Of The Hairy Egg" would prick up David Lynch's ears, as its heartbeat pulse embellished with shakers, jungle noises and distant warped organ generate an uneasy ambiance before mellow diva vocals enter and get overtaken by a barnyard symphony-and that's not even the strange part of the disc. Three decades of recording haven't dimmed Stapleton's WTF factor at all. (JNANA) Dave Segal
