Ahleuchatistas - Even In The Midst...Posted by Laila Hanson on 22-May-08 @ 03:30 PM
[4/5]It might be somewhat inaccurate to compare this avant-punk power-trio to everyone's favorite epic instrumentalists, but Ahleuchatistas and Explosions In The Sky may have more in common than a cursory listen to Even In The Midst... might suggest. Sonically similar to Explosions' debut full-length, How Strange, Innocence, Midst possesses the kind of emotional power in its vocal-less performances that few bands can only hope to meet. Ahleuchatistas' ability to construct beautiful instrumental passages is made all the more captivating by bookending them with mind-bending, Lightning Bolt-esque speed breaks. Pedal-free performance is the name of the game, as the band explore the limits of their own instruments-and brains, if the stop-start changes and off-the-wall time signatures are any indication. Music doesn't get much closer to the edge than this. (CUNEIFORM) Sam Sutherland Official Website: http://cuneiformrecords.com
