Party rock for the self-serious
Cobra Starship - ¡Viva La Cobra!
Thankfully a few years back, enterprising bands realized there was more to rocking out than crying about girls and shoegazing. Credit the end of his old band, Midtown, for Gabe Saporta's epiphany. On Cobra Starship's second release, he blazes through a collection of party-rock jams bursting with keytar energy, tits-out dance beats and cheeky lyrics taken straight from the Fall Out Boy style book-which makes sense, of course, because it was produced by FOB singer Patrick Stump. Like FOB, Saporta and crew don't take themselves too seriously. Consider the song "Guilty Pleasure," a synth-cheese rocker that sees Saporta fronting like a Spandex-clad, spin-kicking David Lee Roth. "I came here to make you dance tonight," he sings over a propulsive, uplifting chorus. "I don't care if I'm a guilty pleasure for you." That sort of party-at-the-end-of-the-world throb and pop carries over onto standout tracks like "One Day, Robots Will Cry" and the sexy "Smile For The Paprazzi," a song that melds a Miami Sound Machine-style groove onto a patently Fueled By Ramen chorus stomp. Contemporary emo-pop sensibilities meet '80s party abandon on this record, and neither have sounded so enjoyable in years. (DECAYDANCE/ATLANTIC) Luke O'Neil

Oh, man. You talk about wow. This was the first album I have herd from Cobra Starship, and I am glad it was. My first song was The City Is At War. After that I looked up thier earlier and curent songs, and just fell in love with Gabes voice.
