Eclectic, eccentric and schizophrenic
Alexis Gideon - Flight Of The LiophantPosted by Laila Hanson on 21-May-08 @ 01:22 PM
[3/5]Alexis Gideon might be recognized for his part in Chicago's cross-dressing duo Princess, but the self-proclaimed "schizo-rap New York hillbilly" now flies alone with his second solo release on Sickroom Records. Flight Of The Liophant takes the listener on a wild journey leaping from gospel to Miami bass-beats-all the handiwork of a one-man band. On "Your Eyes," Gideon sings a folky tune that almost sounds like a lullaby. Then in a jarring transition, Gideon he metamorphs into an eccentric hip-hop lyricist with "Waves In Waves." Flight Of The Liophant keeps you on your toes; there's not a clear theme or sound, so what's coming next is always a mystery. Is he a musical genius, is he trying to find his sound, or is he just plain crazy? It's a fine line which, most likely, Gideon is happy to walk.
