Cut the Lifeline
Jesu - Lifeline EPPosted by Laila Hanson on 21-May-08 @ 12:13 PM
[2/5]Whereas the majority of the Hydra Head roster boasts meaty, atmospheric metal vignettes or choppy, oceanic progressive metal, Jesu opt for an electro-schlock disappointment on their 4-song EP, Lifeline-an unexpected feat given their massive buzz. It's not for lack of intriguing shoegaze-y ambiance or atypical courses of doom, but Lifeline toes a crooked stripe, evident on "You Wear Their Masks," where overabundant vocal acrobatics sully an otherwise decent foray into industrial-pop. This experimental focus has limitless potential, and there's something great about such creative abandon, but it just doesn't jell here. The EP's incredibly long running time doesn't help matters, though "End Of The Road" provides a nice finale. Too bad the rest of the EP doesn't do it justice.
