NOW PLAYING: To Silently Provoke The Ghost EP (SELF-RELEASED)
THE STORY SO FAR: Denver quartet the Photo Atlas were primed for success when their charismatic debut, No, Not Me, Never, was released on Island Records subsidiary Stolen Transmission in early 2007. Unfortunately, Stolen Transmission shut down not long afterward, leaving the band in the lurch. Instead of waiting for a new label deal to come through, the group spent last summer writing and recording new songs with acclaimed producer J. Robbins. "We came to point where we just had to release some new music," vocalist/guitarist Alan Andrews Jr. says. "This was the first time we'd ever actually have someone produce something for us. [Robbins] had good input on what we were trying to do. It was really cool to have help."
WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: In a time of turbulence and uncertainty in the music industry, the Photo Atlas have taken matters into their own hands, electing to self-release their EP. The band also plan to record a new full-length this year, with or without a label. And they'll do whatever it takes to make sure that happens. "We still have day jobs when we're not touring," Andrews says. "We all work in the Pepsi Center, which is the sport arena and concert venue here. But I'm also a sign holder; I stand on the corner and hold a sign one day a week. It's such an awful job. Maybe I should promote our band at the same time." -Emily Zemler
