THE STORY SO FAR: Look Mexico caught the attention of Lujo Records after two radar-dodging EPs showcased their sprawling, semi-atmospheric math-rock, resulting in endless comparisons to acts like American Football and Minus The Bear. One full-length (2007's This Is Animal Music), one compilation (2008's The Crucial Collection) and a few Fest appearances later, and the lineup was settled on vocalist/guitarist Matt Agrella, drummer Josh Mikel, guitarist/vocalist Ryan Slate, bassist Ryan Smith and multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Dave Pinkham. "We started playing shows around town for fun," explains Agrella. "It just kept getting more serious and we realized, 'Hey, we might be able to do this if we just put a hell of a lot of work behind it.'"
WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: The bustling five-piece have grand ambitions, and thankfully, their progressive chops and unique traits back it up, shining through on Gasp Asp. The band plan to track their sophomore full-length this month in a homemade studio below a pizza place and then shop it around. "We want to become successful," says Agrella. "We feel like it's time to [take] the next step [while] trying to make that sound as [least] egotistical as possible," he adds with a laugh. -Brian Shultz
