THE STORY SO FAR: It's the dream of every garage pop-punk band burning CD-Rs and stalking Warped Tour for weeks. Eclectic Phoenix five-piece the Stiletto Formal signed on for a two-week tour of duty on the 2006 Warped Tour and ended up getting invited to finish it out. Maybe it's because the Stiletto Formal have absolutely nothing to do with pop-punk. "[Warped Tour was] a weird scene for us to fit into," says bassist Paul Neely. "But somehow we did. A lot of people would just kind of stop and stare as though they didn't quite know what was going on. We weren't the punk band but we weren't the heavy, screamo-type band either." Chances are the kids were just surprised to see a cellist. They signed to Eyeball after the Gay Blades invited them out to crash the label's CMJ showcase.
WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: Their first full-length effort rarely sticks with one genre for long, incorporating everything from prog to dance-punk, with a guest rap from MURS and another track that sounds like James Brown in an echo chamber. "I know a lot of bands say they're doing something different," says Neely. "But we just really are." -Ed Masley
